About Our Volunteers

Picture

Our volunteers vary in age, hometown, available free time, and gardening experience. They share a commitment to the Garden’s mission. Volunteers include teens, retirees, and full-time workers who join us on weekends. The Naval Submarine School in Groton come and help us with some of the ‘heavy lifting,’ such as shoveling mountains of compost, replacing blueberry netting, or taking the garden down at the end of the growing season.

Some volunteers have the gardener’s gene and have been gardening since childhood, while others have never gardened. Most are in between. Regardless, everyone is welcome to be part of our community and contribute to the common good.

Ways to Contribute

We gather in the Common Good Gardens on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday - days that correspond with the Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries schedules.
Depending on the weather, we normally begin at 9:00 A.M. and work ‘till noon.
However, we have a "come when you can approach". The Common Good Gardens is a flexible place.
There are many ways to contribute, and these types of positions are the backbone of our success.
  • Be a gardener – Prepare beds, plant seeds and seedlings, weed, harvest, weigh produce, remove pests, repair fences, or turn the compost.
  • Be a driver – Pick up produce from farm stands and make deliveries to Shoreline Pantry locations.
  • Recruit volunteers - Help rally friends, relatives, neighbors, and parishioners to garden a few hours each week. Fresh air and exercise are freely available!
  • Encourage service projects – A teen you know may need a service project for school or scouts. We can provide guidance and a recommendation.
  • Development – help maintain our online and website presence, create copy for public relations, take photographs and videos for publication.
  • Fundraising – Help us raise donations by introducing the Common Good Gardens to people or organizations that would find our mission meaningful.
  • Administration - Orderly record keeping is an important garden task. Not every role needed to effectively manage a garden puts soil under your fingernails!
COVID:  Our procedures related to the COVID pandemic are posted on the garden tool shed.  Currently, masks are required if you are not fully vaccinated.
